The whiskey glass falls from a drunken hand and explodes across ceramic kitchen tiles. Lights out, stumbling toward the bedroom, a promise: this is the last time. And the mess will be cleaned up in the morning.
The themes, the characters, the resolutions of our lives blink into and out of our experience just as those shards of broken glass scatter the morning sunlight peeking through the window, splintered in every direction. Shadows cast early warnings of ruined relationships and miscarried careers among glimmers of confidence, of meaning and ambition, which forge their ways through the veins of our fortitude to provide a compelling sense of purpose that enshrouds us while we sleep and directs us through our daily routine of coffee and traffic and emails and the additive small lies that help us endure.
Each thought, each emotion, each experience is a double-edged sword; one side cutting through the havoc of daily life while the other is at our throats. We exist, absorbed in insecurities and distrust and self-hatred. We hazard the tight-ropes and double meanings that make up our tumultuous lives. Filtered through the hazy lens of anger and disappointment, even the strong times are menacing; the high times heavy.
The alarm clock, that monolith, the reminder - It owns us. The buzzing shocks us awake at first then drones on as a cicada, lulling us into a detachment that persists through to the end of the day and results in another night of whiskey. Our selected tone, a jolting yet constant mockery of agency and intelligence making up the opening notes of the daily soundtrack to the routine of our recurring hopelessness.
Alone in this world as we attempt to navigate it, we muster our courage and brandish our faculties to finally steal a tiny step in whatever direction we’re facing. Unbridled caution to the frightful wind. Each tiny footfall a hesitant leap toward deliverance, toward damnation. Somehow, all roads lead to the same disillusionment; all paths terminate on those same ceramic tiles from the night before; all encounters feed this dizzying loop of addiction and depression, forever.
Sometimes this life is so meandering, so pointless, and so confusing that it seems impossible to navigate. And sometimes it is.
